How should a posting interaction start?
While picking up more experience in the UX-Design industry and using social media every day, I started to analyze the different posting interactions of the main platforms these days. Just taking Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter into account over 945 million posts are shared every day. Each of them started with a user interaction linked to a respective posting process. These numbers showcase the high value of a well-done design in this particular touchpoint of a user. Out of curiosity, I started to set up a small project to play around with different prototypes to exceed the limits of a posting interaction nowadays.
While observing the posting section of social media, I started to arrange my own research and diverse prototypes to identify and prove or disprove assumptions of a good posting interaction. Thinking out of the box as well as creating an environment without any constraints for potential designs was the main goal.
Sketching helped me to communicate and examine concepts during design ideation. Throughout this small project, it supported me in discovering creative approaches as well as figuring out potential user flows. Furthermore, conceptualizing with pen and paper enabled me to rapidly extract diverse designs concepts.
A variety of different designs was the cornerstone of the research and usability testing phase. Swipe, Tap and Drag affordances are differentiating every user flow, tending to help us assess a particular idea, design, or assumption.

Conducting usability tests for each version was a valuable step to set up feedback loops and gather data for my assumptions and creative approaches. The goal was to recruit 5 participants in the target audiences consisting of young millennials that are facing posting interactions on a daily basis. While selecting the participants I strived for diversity in age and cultural background to gain a better insight.
The key reason for a usability test and design is research is to collect data that is needed to point out usability issues as well as enhance a website or app`s design. Taking the creative process into account, sketching is an important step in the design and overall development process. It acts as a powerful scaffold for communicating design issues and possible solutions. During the project, sketching helped me to evolve a variety of interaction concepts that are ready to be prototyped. Considering all the pros that are connected to good usability tests as well as comprehensive design research like reducing the overall costs and increasing the success rate of the product, every designer should integrate those tools in their workflow.
